The decision support tool ‘Urban Flood Protection
Matrix’ (UFPM tool) is a promising tool, next to other creative methods
like brainstorming, in the field of urban flood management that has the
potential to successfully enable synergy in the process of (re)designing an
urban riverfront by both urban planners and flood controllers.
The UFPM tool is a useful decision support system
for the evaluation of existing
urban riverfronts and for obtaining feasible combinations of types of riverfronts and types of flood retaining
structures when alteration of the existing urban riverfront is initiated by one or
The UFPM tool gives inspiration during the design
process, gives insight in each others’ fields and enables mutual
understanding amongst the urban planners and flood controllers.
The UFPM tool is best applied in urban riverfronts
of developed countries in which both the physical quality and the visual
quality is important to most people. This tool incorporates both qualities in
the scores for each presented
combination type of riverfront – type of flood retaining structure.
